The Core Curriculum Requirement

What is the requirement?
In the spring of 2002, the Real Estate Commission and Department of Licensing (DOL) adopted a requirement that all active real estate licensees must complete at least 3 clock hours of prescribed core curriculum. This mandatory course must be included in the clock hours required of all active licensees (i.e. 30+ hours) during their two-year renewal cycles.

Why is there a requirement?
The Real Estate Commission feels every licensee should receive practical information on developing issues and trends regarding the practice of real estate. Two core curriculums have been prescribed: one for residential licensees and the other for commercial licensees. After the initial curriculums were implemented on June 1, 2002, updated versions went into effect on January 1, 2004. From that date forward, the curriculums will be updated every two years (i.e. 1/1/06; 1/1/08; etc.).

Where will the requirement be offered?
Importantly, the Department of Licensing has given it's approval to a residential core curriculum course developed by Washington REALTORS® Education and the class has been and will be offered on a periodic basis in various regions of the state. In most cases, the scheduling of these classes depends on whether a local association decided to co-sponsor them with the state association. However, some are directly sponsored by Washington REALTORS® Education, often in connection with business conferences and Ed Con. Go to "Classes" on this web site for these offerings or call Washington REALTORS® Education at 1-800-748-7053. Importantly, an on-line version has also been approved.
