Rainbow Colored Houses

The Fair Housing Act is a landmark measure passed 49 years ago this month and has great historical significance to the real estate industry and those who seek to buy or sell a home.

Nearly 50 Year History

On April 11, 1968, President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1968, as a follow-up to the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

According the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) website, the 1968 act “expanded on previous acts and prohibited discrimination concerning the sale, rental, and financing of housing based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, (and as amended) handicap and family status. Title VIII of the Act is also known as the Fair Housing Act (of 1968).”

Washington state has expanded on the list of those protected by fair housing with additional classifications, including marital status, sexual orientation (including gender identity) and veteran/military status.

Since 1968, the tradition of celebrating Fair Housing Month has broadened over the years with many states issuing proclamations and schools, organizations and communities making it an annual celebration. Because our members are trusted real estate advisors, REALTOR® Associations at the national, state and local levels across the country have made it a priority to recognize April as Fair Housing Month.

REALTORS® Refresh Their Commitment

This year is the 49th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act, a time to commemorate the protections passed in the historic measure. REALTORS® continue to show their support of these values as evidenced by their adherence to Article 10 of the REALTOR® Code of Ethics.

The National Association of REALTORS®, Washington REALTORS® and our many local associations offer a variety of resources and educational tools to help real estate brokers throughout the state refresh their understanding and support of fair housing. In addition to the REALTOR® “R” logo* that indicates our commitment to our strict Code of Ethics, you will often see the Fair Housing logo on our cards that represents our solid dedication to fair housing practices.

Protecting Home Ownership

The purchase of a home is one of the largest financial investments people make and certainly, one of the most significant events in their lifetime.

For many, home ownership is the first step to building personal wealth and a gateway to the American dream. In addition to the tangible financial benefits, studies have shown that home ownership brings stability and substantial social benefits for households, neighborhoods and communities. It is not just buying a house, but achieving the hopes, dreams and prosperous future of those who will live there.

REALTORS® understand that the social and financial benefits of home ownership should be accessible to all those who are able to responsibly qualify to own a home. We work tirelessly to uphold fair housing in our communities and provide top professional services to all of our clients.

Every year in April, REALTORS® recognize Fair Housing Month to reaffirm our continuing commitment to fair and equitable treatment and a high level of service for all those seeking a home or property.

Please join us this month in celebrating the Fair Housing Act and the commitment to the lasting values it represents.
