The Fair Housing Act is a landmark measure passed 49 years ago this month and has great historical significance to the real estate industry and those who seek to buy or sell a home.
Nearly 50 Year History
On April 11, 1968, President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1968, as a follow-up to the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
According the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) website
, the 1968 act “expanded on previous acts and prohibited discrimination concerning the sale, rental, and financing of housing based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, (and as amended) handicap and family status. Title VIII of the Act is also known as the Fair Housing Act (of 1968).”
Washington state has expanded on the list of those protected by fair housing with additional classifications, including marital status, sexual orientation
(including gender identity) and veteran/military status.
Since 1968, the tradition of celebrating Fair Housing Month has broadened over the years with many states issuing proclamations and schools, organizations and communities making it an annual celebration. Because our members are trusted real estate advisors, REALTOR®
Associations at the national, state and local levels across the country have made it a priority to recognize April as Fair Housing Month.
