  • Mike Alvarez

Mike Alvarez
Michael is a licensed designated mortgage broker and an active designated real estate broker. He has over 20 years of experience in all areas of the mortgage and real estate industry and has owned two nationally recognized real estate franchises. He is a member of the Tri-Cities Association of Realtors® and is the incoming 2014 Secretary/Treasurer and Chairman of the Budget Finance Committee as well as sitting on other board committees. “I love our industry am very passionate about sharing my experience and knowledge through education.” I am licensed to teach several topics in the state of Washington from finance, real estate marketing, technology, ethics, consumer protection, business management, and broker management and so on. The 1st half of the year I will be focused on teaching the “2014 - 3.5 hour CORE Class”. I promise to bring passion, excitement and some fun to the classes I teach and look forward to serving your association and its members!

  • Bill Clarke

Bill Clarke is an attorney in Olympia who works on state legislative matters and environmental and land-use permitting. He serves as policy director for Washington REALTORS® and represents other clients in the Washington State Legislature on a variety of issues. He is a former member and chair of the Pollution Control Hearings Board and Shorelines Hearings Board, which hear appeals on water rights, water quality, shorelines, and other environmental permits. He was formerly a partner with Mentor Law Group, PLLC, in Seattle, and has worked in government relations for a number of trade associations. Bill is Chair of the Association of Washington Business's Water Resources Committee. He lives in Olympia with his wife Heather, and daughters Grace and Lucy.



  • Jan Ellingson



As a member of the Washington REALTORS® Senior Faculty Jan teaches ABR, GRI, SFR, SRES, Professional Standards, Code of Ethics, At Home With Diversity, Mortgage Fraud, Environmental Hazards, the Washington licensing CORE course, along with many classes she has written. Jan was named Instructor of the Year by Washington REALTORS® in 2006, she also received the EDDY Award in 2006 and 2015 for her contributions to excellence in real estate education. She has been honored with her local and state REALTOR® of the Year awards, and is a Past President and Treasurer of Washington REALTORS®, past President of the North Puget Sound Association of REALTORS®, and has served on numerous REALTOR® committees on the local, state and national levels. She served as the 2011 Regional Vice President for Region 12 of the National Association of REALTORS®, and is a graduate of the NAR Leadership Academy. She served for 5 years as the NAR President's Liaison to New Zealand, and has served as the Vice-Chair and chair of the Professional Standards Forum at NAR in 2012 along with many years on the committee. Further, she is a member of the Real Estate Buyer's Agent Council (REBAC), served as the Woman's Council of REALTORS® (WCR) 2010 and 2011 State Treasurer, Council of Residential Specialists (CRS), Council of Real Estate Brokerage Managers (CRB) 2013 State President, Graduate REALTOR® Institute (GRI), served on the Northwest Multiple Listing Service Disciplinary Review Board , the Advisory Board to the Skagit County Planning and Development Department, and is a past Commissioner and Vice-Chair of the Skagit County Planning Commission. She also served on the Department of Licensing's RCW 18.85 review Task Force. Her REALTOR® volunteerism has extended to building homes around the country with the REALTOR® Habitat for Humanity project, as well as leading a team of 15 REALTORS® to Louisiana for a Katrina Disaster Relief build. Finally, and most important, Jan is a practicing real estate professional as a Managing Broker at Keller Williams Western Realty in Mount Vernon, Washington. She and her husband Van enjoy playing golf, and in her spare time she enjoys singing with her band.

Annie Fitzsimmons is a lawyer whose entire post-adolescent life has focused on the Washington real estate market place in one form or another. When she was 11 years old, her parents opened a real estate company and she worked in the office first as the cleaning crew, later as a receptionist, bookkeeper and typist and ultimately as a real estate licensee. At age 23, she began law school at the University of Washington and upon graduating, began her legal career with the Tacoma law firm of Gordon, Thomas, Honeywell, Malanca, Peterson & Daheim. She was one of the firm's primary residential real property lawyers until 2001 when she left to open her own office and since has served as Washington Realtors Legal Hotline Attorney as well as providing a variety of other legal services for WR. She served on the task force that drafted the Agency Law From 1994 to 1996 and the task force that worked in 2004 and 2005 considering revisions to the Licensing Law, RCW 18.85. She has sued and defended real property owners, buyers, sellers and brokers across the state but has recently made it her personal priority to ensure that no Washington REALTOR® is ever sued again for something they could have avoided. Believing that education is the best way to achieve this goal, she is here today. So, take advantage of her experience and ask questions that are important to you.   • Michael Schoonover

Michael R. Schoonover is the 2014 President-Elect of the Washington REALTORS®. He has 29 years of experience in property management, development, acquisition and diposition. He focus's his practice on vacant land and commercial real estate. Currently, he is the Managing Director of RE/MAX Honors–Commercial Division in Puyallup, WA. One of the fastest growing commercial Brokerages in the region. Michael has served on numerous Washington REALTORS® committees, PAG's, Task Forces and as the chair of the Legislative Steering committee as well as its Vice President of Government Affairs. He was awarded Washington REALTORS® “Commercial REALTOR® of the Year” in 2010, and received the REALTORS® Land Institutes “Washington State Land Broker of the Year” the same year. In 2012 Michael was recognized as the “Hugh Hawkins Instructor of the Year”. Recently Michael received the National Association of REALTORS® “2013 National Commercial Award” for outstanding service in the field of Commercial Real Estate. Michael's service extends to the National level where he currently service on two committees. As an instructor/speaker for Washington REALTORS®, REBAC® and the REALTORS® Land Institute Michael has taught classes and given keynote addresses around the country and at several national conventions. He recently co–wrote and developed the VA & Military Real Estate Specialist© certification and authored the PRIMETIME© Time Management and Business Planning Program. Michael is a graduate of Portland State University. Michael and Cheryl live in Gig Harbor, WA and enjoy their four adult children and for active grandchildren.

Michael Smith

Michael Smith, aka “Smit”, purchased his first piece of real estate at age 24 in 1982.  His entrepreneurial spirit led him to become a mortgage broker in 1997.  From 1997 until he and his wife relocated in 2015 from California to Woodinville, WA; Smit worked for numerous brokers and banks before starting his own brokerage company in 2003 called Golden Bear Financial Corporation.  As an adjunct real estate instructor at Diablo Valley College in the Bay Area, Smit taught Real Estate Property Management and Real Estate Finance - both CA Dept of Real Estate certified courses.  Currently Smit teaches N.A.R. Designation courses SRES, SRS, ABR AND RENE.  He too has written and teaches numerous WA Continuing education classes.
Smit is passionate about BBQ, riding bikes and walking his dog Bailey at 5:30am every day.

  • Doug Tingvall

DOUG TINGVALL has been representing real estate professionals for 30 years and is one of the best-known and most respected real estate attorneys in Washington. Doug was the principal drafter of the Law of Real Estate Agency in Washington, as well as several other laws affecting real estate. He also handled the successful appeal in Sing v. John L. Scott, Inc., 134 Wn.2d 24 (1997). Doug's practice emphasizes real estate brokerage law, transactions, litigation, disciplinary actions, expert testimony and education. A graduate of the University of Washington School of Business (Cum Laud e and Phi Beta Kappa) and the University of Washington School of Law (Member, WASHINGTON LAW REVIEW), Doug has served as President of the Washington Real Estate Education Foundation, and on numerous industry committees and task forces. Doug is an instructor for GRI and teaches courses on purchase and sale agreements, agency law, risk reduction, new construction, core curriculum and legal update. He received the “Affiliate of the Year” award from the Seattle- King County Board of REALTORS® in 1984 and from the Washington Association of REALTORS® in 1985, the Eddy Award from the Washington Real Estate Education Foundation in 1988, and the Hugh Hawkins “Instructor of the Year” award from the Washington Association of REALTORS® in 2003. Doug was also named a “ Super Lawyer” by Washington Law & Politics in 2001. Lawyer by day and performer by night, Doug also has been active in community musical theatre and has been seen as a Pirate in The Pirates of Penzance (Bellevue Opera) , Marmaduke Poindexter in The Sorcerer (Bellevue Opera), the Grand Inquisitor in The Gondoliers (Bellevue Opera), Sergeant Meryll in The Yeomen of the Guard (Bellevue Opera and Seattle Gilbert & Sullivan Society) , Pish-Tush and Pooh-Bah in The Mikado (Bellevue Opera, Bremerton Community Theatre and Seattle Gilbert & Sullivan Society), Emile de Becque in South Pacific (Northwest Savoyards) and Principle Bass-Baritone in Broadway's Golden Age (Burien Little Theater). Doug also does voice-over work. A native Washingtonian, Doug live in Newcastle with his wife, Augusta.

  • John Blom

John Blom joined the Washington REALTORS® the same year he received his real estate license in 2009. He then became a managing broker in 2016. John’s home base is Vancouver, WA and he has been with his current firm for the bulk of his real estate career. Prior to his real estate career John was a civilian research/writer for the US Army Combat Studies Institute. That said, John is not new to being strategic in his approach and exercising discipline.
He has served as the President of the Clark County Association of REALTORS® and continues to serve on numerous committees for the local, state, and national association of REALTORS®. Outside of real estate, he is a member of the Clark County Council and is on the boards of the Boys and Girls Club of Southwest Washington and the Historic Trust.  He lives in Vancouver with his wife and two children.  He enjoys running and training for Spartan races, as well as barbecuing, and traveling with his family. John has a passion for serving and feels being an instructor with Washington REALTORS® is a natural fit for his experience and looks forward to sharing information with his fellow REALTORS®.

Licensed since 1992, I obtained my associate broker's license in 1994. I held my first managing broker position in 1996. I have always pursued information and education in order to provide the best service possible-whether to my clients, customers or fellow associates. I also believe that participation is important. I belong to NAR, WR and TPCAR in the support of the professionalism of being a REALTOR, not simply a real estate licensee. I am honored to be a provider of Ethics training at Tacoma/Pierce County Association of REALTORS. He’s been on the cover of Realtor Magazine, was awarded 30 under 30 nationally, is a past president for the North Puget Sound Association for Realtors, and is a Crossfit Level 1 Trainer. He is passionate about the importance of building net worth through home ownership. He encourages responsible spending habits, realistic debt management, and incorporating other healthy and beneficial life skills.

Margo has proudly worn the REALTOR®  ”R” and been a Women’s Council Member for more than 26 years.  She is a working Broker in Tacoma, Washington at John L. Scott’s Tacoma-University Place office. Passionate about the industry, leadership and mentoring Margo has served as Tacoma-Pierce County Association and Women’s Council President, Washington State Women’s Council and Association of REALTORS®  President, 2011 National Women’s Council of REALTORS®  President, NAR 2018 REALTOR®  Party Director and currently is one of NAR’s Region 12 RPAC Fundraising Trustees. Born in Philadelphia, PA, Margo Wheeler is honored to have also served in the U.S. Army retiring at the rank of First Sergeant.
