Realtors®, Property Owners Get Good News

More than 500 Washington REALTORS® from across the state received some exciting news when they were in Olympia recently visiting state legislators during their annual Legislative Day. More than 120 of those REALTORS® were first-time attendees who were thrilled to be advocates on an amazing day at our state’s Capital!

More than 500 Washington REALTORS® from across the state received some exciting news when they were in Olympia recently visiting state legislators during their annual Legislative Day. More than 120 of those Realtors® were first-time attendees who were thrilled to be advocates on an amazing day at our state’s Capital!


The Legislature passed a measure that day that fixes the 2016 Washington State Supreme Court ruling known as the Hirst decision regarding water availability for new private wells.

It was a huge victory for property owners, a fix, that the Washington Realtors® had worked hard on for more than a year. Thousands of our members across the state had sent messages to legislators, many with real-life stories about how the Hirst decision had impacted our clients’ use and development of their personal property.

It was electrifying to be in Olympia at the time to experience history in the making! It was also fantastic news to bring home to our communities, where property owners had been affected.

Washington Realtors® website followed up with information and an analysis from one of Washington’s foremost water experts on how the Hirst fix applies to areas in the state. That information is at www.warealtor.org.

Advocating for Home and Property Owners

The Hirst decision was not the only issue we discussed during that exciting day on the Hill.

In more than 100 scheduled appointments, REALTORS® met with their respective legislators to discuss the residential and commercial real estate markets, especially the low housing inventory and the need for affordable housing opportunities to meet a soaring demand.

REALTORS® encouraged legislators to address the entire spectrum of both urban and rural housing needs–from homelessness to improving housing supply for homebuyers. It is the lack of supply of all housing types-houses, condominiums and apartments-that is at the core of the affordability crisis.  

REALTORS® also urged the Legislature to take steps to protect consumers and assist student borrowers so that their higher education debt is not a hindrance to homeownership. Student debt is a primary reason why homeownership rates lag for the millennial generation.  

According to a joint study by the National Association of Realtors® and the non-profit American Student Assistance, student debt is an impasse for younger Americans to own a home, start families and new businesses and plan for retirement.

Noting the 50th Anniversary of Fair Housing

When we met with our legislators, REALTORS® also brought attention to this year’s 50th Anniversary of the Fair Housing Act that protects equal housing opportunities.

According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) website, the 1968 act “prohibited discrimination concerning the sale, rental, and financing of housing based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, (and as amended) handicap and family status.”

As REALTORS®, we are committed to Fair Housing and have joined together to commemorate the landmark decision that has made our industry and our nation stronger.
