2017 Washington REALTOR® Awards

Citizen of the Year Award Nominees

MARK-MATTHIAS
  • Mark Matthias
  • Beaches Restaurants & Warehouse '23

FROM THE CLARK COUNTY ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®:
" 'If you’re going to have a business in a community, help make it better. There are people out there struggling. Let’s try to pull them along.' ” That is the philosophy of Mark Matthias, owner of Beaches Restaurants and WareHouse ’23. Since 1995, Matthias has supported a wide variety of  community give-back programs, hatched by himself and his cohesive team of employees. It began with the Charity Table—a table that is set aside with the reservation fee going to a local children’s program— and was followed by Green Eggs and Ham and their summer-long Cruisin’ events. The beauty of philanthropy, Matthias says, is that it doesn’t take wealth to make things happen. It starts with heart-felt inspiration and the ability to see strength in numbers. Through partnering with other area organizations including CCAR and our non-profit, The Foundation, Matthias and his team have been able to take their concepts and increase them beyond what even they thought was possible. Green Eggs and Ham began at one at-risk school to encourage parent involvement and has grown to 54 schools in the Vancouver area, thanks to community sponsorships that have made it a self-sufficient project. On average, Beaches staff and a host of volunteers serve ten schools a day for five days during the national Dr. Seuss Read Across America event."

DEREK-KILMER
  • Representative Derek Kilmer
  • Washington State Legislature

FROM THE KITSAP COUNTY ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®:
"United States Representative Derek Kilmer is arguably the most visible and energetic elected official in our community.  In spite of his hectic schedule in Washington, DC, Representative Kilmer makes himself available to REALTORS® and champions REALTOR® Quality of Life issues in the Congress."

JOEL-KRETZ
  • Representative Joel Kretz
  • Washington State Legislature

FROM THE NORTH CENTRAL WA ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®:
"We’ve worked with Joel for many years and he has always been an excellent supporter of private property rights, a proponent of affordable housing and an advocate for small business. Joel was one the few people on the negotiating team that brokered the deal to fix the Hirst decision from the State Supreme Court with buy in from the House Democrats, Senate Democrats, Senate Republicans and the Governor. When it came time to vote, not only did Representative Kretz support the REALTOR® Association and our clients by voting for the fix, he was a tireless champion who succeeded in getting every Republican in the House to unanimously support our issue.  Joel has always had a rare, common sense approach that is always refreshing."

KRISTIINA-MILLER
  • Kristiina Miller
  • Garage of Blessings

FROM THE NORTH PUGET SOUND ASSOCIATION REALTORS®:
"Kristiina Miller is a powerhouse on Whidbey Island. A true ‘from the ground up’ pioneer, an idea that began in a garage in 2012, has blossomed into a project so large, and so invaluable, that it caught the attention of a national television icon! Dependent upon donations and wonderful volunteers, thousands of Island County residents – regardless of their situation – have been able to come and take what they need – clothing, toiletries, housewares .. even a PB&J sandwich .. at no charge. Facing the potential loss of a location, faith and determination would prove to be the defining miracle that was needed to continue her work in the community.  Recently, Mike Rowe (of Dirty Jobs and Deadliest Catch fame), featured her on his new venture “Returning The Favor” by not only adding an extra space to the new location, but covering the rent for two years. Several local businesses have also stepped up to help." http://q13fox.com/2018/02/08/changemaker-kristiina-miller-turns-donations-into-garage-of-blessings/

ROB-CURLEY
  • Rob Curley
  • The Spokesman-Review

FROM THE SPOKANE ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®:
"The Spokane Association of REALTORS® Citizen of the Year nominee is Rob Curley, Editor of the Spokesman-Review.  Our Citizen of the Year nominee moved to Spokane approximately two years ago to become Editor of the local daily newspaper, The Spokesman-Review.  In that brief period of time he has increased the readership in our daily newspaper significantly.  He has done this with an all-out effort to cover local news in-depth with each edition. Born in a small town in Kansas, Rob Curley knew at a young age that the newspaper business was in his blood. Having worked in newspapers across the country, from the Washington Post to the Las Vegas Sun and the Orange County Register, he sought out the position of Editor of The Spokesman-Review when the past editor announced his retirement.  He sought out The Spokesman-Review because it was one of the few 100% family owned local newspapers left in America.  Mr Curley was well regarded in the newspaper business having won top awards such as the Pulitzer Prize in Print Journalism while with the Las Vegas Sun and the Best Real Estate Section in the Country while with the Orange County Register.  In his short time in Spokane he has been instrumental directing the coverage of our real estate market like no one before him. Again, with an all-consuming commitment to covering local news and one with a passion for his new community that is most contagious, our Citizen of the Year nominee is Rob Curley ."

BARBARA-BRENNER
  • Barbara Brenner
  • Whatcom City Council

FROM THE WHATCOM COUNTY ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®:
"Barbara Brenner is a strong supporter of the Whatcom County Association of REALTORS®.  During the recent issues arising from the case of Hirst vs. Whatcom County, Barbara was at times the sole voice demanding action from an otherwise non-responsive planning department.  She contacted many of the affected landowners herself to investigate and attempt to find a path forward for them so that they could build their homes and start working toward their American Dream.  Barbara was the only person not voting for successive building moratoriums imposed after the Hirst decision, votes that went against the majority of her colleagues and the advice of the County's legal counsel. Barbara has always been an advocate for REALTORS® and REALTOR® issues.  On a personal note, Barbara was one of a few elected officials who followed our Executive Officer's progress during his illness and maintained constant contact with him throughout.  At every turn, Barbara would always ask if there was anything that she could do to help and would often provide Perry with the current events at the Whatcom County Council."

  • WFG National Title

FROM THE CLARK COUNTY ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®:
"This person stepped up in a big way this year.  She has always been involved, but this year she made a personal commitment to invest her time as the Co-Chair of our Affiliate Council.  Not content to just lead on the council, she also served as an Affiliate Director of CCAR. In her tenure, she helped bring back Boo-Bowl, a bowling tournament which for the first time ever, benefited our non-profit arm; The Foundation.  Furthermore, Sheri exposed and educated us on the wire fraud issues that have sadly become a serious concern all across the nation. She helped us not only educate our board, but also the community. Because of her work, we have an enlightening wire fraud article that will be published to help protect consumers. Finally, she alerted us to the effects the Hirst Decision was having on our largest local well-drilling business. She serves our membership  in both a leadership capacity and in her professional and personal life and any association would be lucky to have an Affiliate as great as Sheri Hunzeker. She is a staple in our association family!"

An avid fisherman, he enjoys salt-water fishing and also taking to the slopes with his family! As part of the Annual Charity Golf Tournament Committee, he is, according to fellow committee members, ‘always engaged and extremely helpful’ and works hard to reach out to affiliates to secure the very important sponsorships needed to make our Golf Tournament a success every year, and provide the funds needed for our worthy charities."

The program is called Angels and Cherubs. The children's names are submitted by the teachers with parent approval, most of these children are homeless, they don't have supplies and they don't have clothes that fit them.  Members go through Lori to 'adopt' a child for the year. The program was greeted with such positive response from members that the auction at the installation was held for the cause to start kids out when they first arrive at school, with clothes and supplies. $7500 were raised. Although only a size, age and sex is given to the REALTOR®, the kids have written tear jerking thank you notes. These are being read at the monthly meetings. Lori Brady-Dolby was instrumental in setting up this win-win Angels and Cherubs Program that we hope to carry on for years to come."

DOMINIC-PETTRUZZELLI
  • Dominic Pettruzzelli
  • Keller Williams Western Realty

FROM THE NORTH PUGET SOUND ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®:
"Dominic Pettruzzelli is someone that most people know as a dynamo in the Realtor community. A quick study, and a born leader who has jumped into the Realtor community with enthusiasm and, as a result, great success! It should come as no surprise that the same energy that goes into his business, also goes into his service to the community. But you may not know that, after making plans to attend a company-wide function in Texas a few months ago, ‘Hurricane Harvey’ came to Houston and caused an incredible amount damage. After receiving notification that in lieu of the conference, all the money and energy would be going to renting buses and heading to the devastation to help with the relief effort. Though a refund was offered, this Realtor not only declined… but traveled to Texas to help. After bunking with fellow volunteers, and bussing into the devastated areas, they created an impromptu crew and began to start clearing homes of flood damage – removing drywall, flooring… everything that was damaged and created a mold risk. Before leaving, there was one more thing… a $10,000 donation came straight from his pocket. Money that was ear-marked for an addition on his house – and donated it to the Red Cross Relief Fund. He’s not just mild-mannered Clark Kent, he’s also Superman!"

Lunch for the Break provides lunches to needy students from 450 families at holiday breaks during the school year.  This all-volunteer effort partners with the Issaquah Food bank and area churches. Its success has had a profound impact on school district families and students. Cindy has now expanded on that success by founding “Books for the Break,” a program that collects children’s books to give out to students when their families come in to pick up boxes of food. King County Library provided volunteer librarians to help kids select their books, and last December around 2500 books were gifted to kids to keep them busy over the school break! From Bremerton’s urban renewal to Black Diamond’s massive mixed-use development, these reporters were determined to inform KUOW’s audience about growth and how it transforms communities. WENDY-SCHERRER
  • Wendy Sherrer

FROM THE WHATCOM COUNTY ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®:

"Wendy Sherrer decided in 2017 that it was time to get serious about infill in Bellingham!  While she had been a staunch supporter of the official Neighborhood Advisory Committee in Bellingham, she no longer supported the protectionist attitude promoted by neighborhood advocates that had hindered providing housing in the established neighborhoods.  Ms. Sherrer organized, recruited sponsors, and conducted Bellingham's first YIMBY (Yes! In My Back Yard) program. On April 29, 2017, Ms. Sherrer program became a reality.  With sponsorship from the Whatcom County Association of REALTORS® and a $5,000 grant from the Whatcom Community Foundation, 90 people gathered in the neighborhood church to learn about infill opportunities in Bellingham's Happy Valley Neighborhood.  Ms. Sherrer and her committee produced an 11-minute video about the neighborhood and secured two keynote speakers on the topics of infill and increased density in established neighborhoods.  The goal, which was easily achieved through Ms. Sherrer's efforts, was to demonstrate how housing could be more affordable to greater numbers of people through the use of unique housing types. YIMBY 2 is currently in the works!  From the Whatcom Watch article about Wendy's efforts:  Wendy Scherrer, 64, has three adult children and three grandchildren. She is a 1976 Huxley College graduate who helped develop the Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association (NSEA) and became its Executive Director in 1999. After earning her environmental planning degree in 1976, Wendy received a master’s in science education at Western Washington University in 1988. She joined fellow educators in 1990 to found the Environmental Education Association of Washington. She also helped start the North Cascades Institute’s school field-based environmental education and teacher training programs, including Mountain School. She helped plan NCI’s Environmental Learning Center on Diablo Lake and wrote curriculum guides for fourth through eighth grades, including Celebrating Wildflowers, Teaching for Wilderness, and Sharing the Skagit."

A survivor of cancer, he feels that one of the reasons he is here is to encourage people to have a positive outlook on life. His tenacity and leadership will impact us and the industry for many years." https://www.facebook.com/ccrealtor/videos/vl.1398125550297498/10156849304748835/?type=1

REALTOR® of the Year Award Nominees

BRIAN-PEKLY
  • Brian Pelky
  • Windermere Stellar

FROM THE CLARK COUNTY ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®:
"Brian Pelky was CCAR's 2017 REALTOR® of The Year and without a doubt he is a true rock star. He serves as a shining example of how REALTORS® reach out in service to their fellow members and the community we all share. This kind and generous person had a vision to ensure we kept those most in need in our community a priority. He made it his mission to bring our non-profit arm, the Foundation, back from an almost 8-year hiatus. He worked with his peers to pinpoint heart and talent to run the Foundations board. He leads by example, participating in fund-raiser while coaching and standing back enough to give others a chance to lead and grow. Last November,, The Foundation gave $35,000 in grants to local non-profits. His vision will be one of the reasons why someone tonight will be able to take a hot shower, why a child will graduate high school and a woman will be able to sleep well fed and feel safe. He is stubborn about his goals, never allowing them to be pushed aside, but he is also flexible about the methods and inspires us to work together. He also sits on the Finance Committee for Washington REALTORS® and the Government Affairs Committee for CCAR. He volunteers for Meals on Wheels, he supports his wife’s animal rescue endeavors, and finds the time to be a great husband, father, friend and talented musician. We were honored and proud to present our REALTOR® of The Year Award to Brian Pelky. Of special note, our RPAC Auction raised more than ever in his tenure due in large part to the work he put into the event. From production to actually playing a guitar solo (changing the Beatles original from "Back in the USSR" to "Back at CCAR"!) that he had been able to secure... donated and signed by Michael Jacksons lead guitar player. Brian also stepped up in a big way in 2016 when our then president John Blom was running for an elected position. Many times, I had to rely on Brian to perform presidential duties which allowed a clear separation from myself, the association and John... a requirement of the Independent Expenditure we were working on. The following is a link to the video presented at our awards ceremony. Feel free to skip the front part which states the above dialogue. The last part has photos and ends with a quick clip of him playing the guitar at our RPAC auction. Facebook Video"

AMBER-SORIA
  • Amber Soria
  • Soria Real Estate

FROM THE NORTH PUGET SOUND ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®:
"Our nominee has been such an upbeat influence on our association!  Not only a top producer, but has served in leadership roles for NPSAR and as a Washington REALTOR® Director. In her limited ‘spare time’, she also gives her time and energy generously to the Jean Thompson Guild benefitting the Seattle Children’s Hospital, to help them reach their fundraising goals. Most of you know her by her million-megawatt smile, and joyous ‘Aloha’ spirit, but you should also know that she has a very caring and generous heart. And, like her Disney doppelganger, she is indeed… Brave! Aside from her wonderful husband, she is crazy about her ‘boys’ – Brutus and the new pup, Otis. It is our pleasure to nominate her for the Washington REALTOR® of the Year Award."

The REALTOR®of the Year Award recognizes outstanding achievement at the local, state, and national levels of the Association. Sam had an unprecedented level of involvement during 2017. In addition to his duties as President of the local Association and acting as its spokesperson during a time when housing became the critical issue in our region, Sam also Chaired the Washington REALTOR® Legislative Steering Committee. The 2017 legislative session had numerous real estate tax and regulatory issues in play. As a result of Sam’s leadership with other REALTORS®, real estate brokerages will save $50 million in state taxes next year and beyond. If that achievement was not significant enough, Sam’s work on the “MLS of Choice” concept will affect every REALTOR® in the country. Sam was asked by the Chair of NAR’s MLS Policy Committee to help develop and then present the new MLS policy to the NAR Board, which adopted the rule for implementation in 2018. This amazing achievement will save brokerages additional fees and prompt MLS’s to be as efficient as possible in delivery of service. Sam is the V.P. of Strategic Growth for Coldwell Banker Danforth Seattle. His team, Seattle Homes Group, generates business online at SeattleHome.com and SeattleCondo.com, and sells real estate across the Greater Seattle market. He also does consulting for technology companies and investors in the real estate space and has gained real estate recognition as part of the T3 Swanepoel Power 200’s top 20 Social Influencers. Sam is known in the real estate industry for being on the cutting edge of issues ranging from technology to legislative policy. MARY-KAY-ROBINSON
  • MaryKay Robinson
  • Windermere Real Estate

FROM THE WHATCOM COUNTY ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®:
"Grande dame, noun, A woman of influential position within a particular sphere. When we hear the term grande dame, we tend to think of a woman of significant age who is just a little eccentric and focused on social matters.  While MaryKay Robinson exhibits the elegance and grace of the stereotypical grande dame, the dictionary definition more perfectly describes this woman who influences the Whatcom County real estate industry, but who is also beginning to influence the Washington real estate industry.  MaryKay is an outstanding woman of exceptional intellect, personal grace, and a passion for our industry and the people in it. I know this from my own intensely personal experience and I also know that my experience is not exceptional, but rather the usual for this grande dame in our industry.  Please join the Whatcom County Association of REALTORS® as we celebrate this influential force in our community, in our industry, and more importantly, in our friendship with MaryKay Robinson."
