You must be a current member of the National Association of REALTORS® to identify yourself as a REALTOR®, use the REALTOR® logo or claim to hold REALTOR® designations. Real Estate Licensees who represent themselves as REALTORS® and are not current members are in violation of copyright law and Washington State Law. In January 2014 the Washington Association of REALTORS® launched a public information campaign in the Homes and Land Magazine to make potential home buyers aware of the REALTOR® trademark and the procedure to follow if a Broker is misrepresenting themselves. Following is the ad we will be running throughout 2014. STATE LAW NOTICE TO REAL ESTATE SELLERS and BUYERS: Not every real estate broker is a REALTOR®. REALTORS® choose to be members of the National Association of REALTORS® and voluntarily agree to abide by the Highest Standard of Conduct–the REALTOR® Code of Ethics.   • Advertise, represent or claim they are a REALTOR® if they are not, or
  • To deceptively misrepresent the status of REALTOR® professional designations or certifications, thereby misrepresenting professional real estate credentials; or
  • To deceptively refer to themselves as a REALTOR® in order to falsely imply they are subject to the Higher Standard of Conduct in the REALTOR® Code of Ethics, or to falsely imply that questions about their professional real estate brokerage activities are subject to review under the REALTORS® Professional Standards review process.
As a Housing Consumer you deserve more. Insist on a REALTOR®.
