The recent undercover Newsday expose produced powerful evidence of real estate agents violating Fair Housing law. Washington REALTORS® intends to be a leading contributor to strengthening awareness of, and compliance with, Fair Housing laws and to achieving equal opportunity in housing in Washington state.

The full scope of this effort is yet to be determined but is expected to include:

  • Developing revised Fair Housing training classes, sessions and materials.

  • Working with appropriate governmental agencies, nonprofit organizations and other industry groups to develop a coordinated approach to achieving the goals of the Fair Housing laws.

  • Conducting research to attempt to identify barriers to equal opportunity in home ownership in Washington state.

To that end, the Washington REALTOR® Executive Committee has authorized up to $100,000 for this program. We hope to convene an Advisory Group of representatives from the groups mentioned above to share ideas, programs and services, and leverage each others’ experience and expertise to achieve our common goals. Washington REALTORS® members will sit on the Advisory Group, to be appointed by the Washington REALTORS® Leadership Team.

“As REALTORS, we have a responsibility to safeguard the real estate transaction, to ensure that the real estate market has every opportunity to thrive and that our members have the tools and resources they need to excel in their careers. This responsibility does not stop there! REALTORS® also have an obligation to the consumer, especially those of protected classes. Any time a real estate broker violates Fair Housing laws, whether intentionally or unintentionally, our industry has a problem. EVERY real estate broker and firm has a duty to know the Fair Housing Laws...not just because it is the law, but because it is the right thing to do”.

– Dale Chumbley, 2019 WR President
