Mel Moore
Mel Moore has been an active leader in the Yakima Community and was recognized by the Yakima Association of REALTORS with the 2022 Community Service Award.

Yakima Valley Sports Commission
Mel received the Yakima Valley Sports Commission Community Service Award in June of 2022. In addition, the award will henceforth be known as the Mel Moore Community Service Award.
Hot Shots
Founding organizer of Yakima’s “Hot Shots” 3 on 3 basketball tournament in 2003, and served as event director until the Yakima Valley Sports Commission took it over in 2005. He continues his involvement to this day. From 217 teams in the initial tournament, it has grown to over 500 teams.
Parker Youth and Sports Foundation
Mel has spent “the better part of 30 years” helping Yakima host state high school
tournaments. In 2018 he was honored by PYSF at their “Legends Reunion”. He continues to serve as a Manager of the state 1A and 2A basketball tournament in Yakima.
Ted Robertson Community Service Award
Mel was honored with this award, along with Gene Rostvold, Gary George, and Paul
Campbell in 2003.
WIAA Hall of Fame
Mel was inducted into the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Hall of Fame in 2013 as a Contributor, not only for basketball and baseball state tournaments in Yakima, but also for the State Dance/Drill competition, as well as the 1B, 2B, and 1A State Volleyball Tournament. He was the recipient of the Curt and
Chee Chee Bruskland Service Award
(2010), presented to individuals who “exemplify service to the WIAA”.
Mike Colbrese, a WIAA official, comments: “Mel Moore is the gem that you find every once in a while in a community who just makes things work out of a deep sense of community pride and a love for our Youth. We are all better off because of our connections to Mel.”
Yakima Rotary
Mel has honored in 2012 as a Rotary Unsung Hero. “Last week we recognized Mel Moore as the fourth and final Unsung Hero for the Rotary year. Mel was chosen for his tireless devotion to youth sports programs in our community for over 30 years. Cragg Gilbert presented the award sharing that you could never say no to Mel if he asked for help. He was instrumental in the success of youth sports in Yakima and programs that include American Legion baseball and WIAA tournaments and state championships for baseball, basketball and volleyball. Described as a calm and persistent, he knew just as much about the visiting team as the home team. With a plaque and a standing ovation we honored him for his dedication and making Yakima not only a great place to live but a great place to play.
Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association
Mel was awarded the Ed Pepple Service Award for his contributions to hosting state
tournaments in Yakima.
American Legion Baseball
A tireless worker for legion ball, Mel was instrumental in bringing the American Legion World Series to Yakima in 2001.
Mel Stottlemyre Baseball Camp
Served as an organizer and supporter. Presenters included Mel Stottlemyre, Bob
Garretson, Lane Phillips, Bo Bo Brayton, Mike Dunbar and Bill Faller.
